Tufting guide

When to mirror a tufting design

The right orientation depends on which side of the cloth you work from. If you tuft from the back, the front-facing result reverses what you see while working.

Quick workflow

  1. Decide which side of the cloth you will trace.
  2. Mirror when tufting from the back, especially for text.
  3. Keep one labeled reference screenshot.
  4. Verify one asymmetric detail before starting.

Start with an unmistakable detail

Use a letter, an animal facing one way, or a leaf that appears on only one side. Symmetric shapes can hide a reversed design. Mark which view is the intended finished front before preparing the tracing image.

Mirror once in the production workflow

Avoid mirroring in an image editor and then mirroring again during export. Keep an unchanged reference and a clearly identified tracing version. Compare the final projection or printed output with that reference, rather than relying only on a switch label.

Check from the finished side

Before committing the full outline, transfer a small asymmetric feature and view it from the intended front. For lettering, check both the order of the characters and the shape of individual letters. If you trace from the front instead, reassess whether mirroring is needed.

Before you start: One final orientation check is especially useful after changing from projection to PDF or using an image that was already flipped.

Do it in RugReady

RugReady keeps mirroring in the Workshop alongside dimensions and color controls so the tracing orientation stays part of the project recipe.
